RESEARCH
Saint John’s
Cancer Center ranked in the top 5 percent of U.S. and
Canadian community hospitals for participation in research
protocols through RTOG (Radiation Therapy Oncology Group)
for the second year in a row.
A protocol
is a study, in its simplest terms, to determine the best
possible treatment for a specific cancer.
Saint John’s
input in RTOG is great news for Madison County cancer
patients. Mayo Clinic agreed to oversee Saint John’s as a
sponsoring affiliate hospital in this program. Working with
Mayo Clinic allows us to contribute to the national cancer
research effort.
Based in
Philadelphia, RTOG runs clinical trials all over the
U.S.
and Canada in over 260 affiliate institutions and is funded
by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The studies all
involve radiation therapy used alone or paired with
chemotherapy and focus on quality of life for patients.
Madison
County patients are eager to participate in studies through
RTOG. Saint John’s has 100 patients participating in
protocols. Participation in a research protocol is always
voluntary.
