LAPAROSCOPIC
HYSTERECTOMY:
Kimberly
Kirtley, Alexandria
When Kimberly Kirtley was facing hysterectomy surgery, her
mother and family members didn’t believe her when she told
them she was going to have a hysterectomy with only small
incisions. They thought she had misunderstood something and
told her she’d be off work 4-8 weeks. But four hours after
the surgery, she was home. “I could have had this procedure
on Friday and gone back to work on Monday,” Kimberly said.
And two weeks later, she was back to doing 99% of what she’d
done before—not bad for a woman who takes care of a huge
garden with 75 hostas, yuccas and flowers, swims three times
a week, and cares for horses. “I haven’t ridden my horses
yet,” Kimberly said at the time, “but I expect to soon.”
Kimberly appreciates that the only thing she has left of her
surgery are two very small incisions—one on each side, very
low and one in her navel. She said she expects the incisions
to shrink further, and she had no infection.
Kimberly says the laparoscopic hysterectomy has given her
back her active life. “I teach school and essentially was
having to live on pain medication before the surgery,” she
said. “I wasn’t sleeping and had dark circles under my eyes.
It was definitely affecting my quality of life. Now that
I’ve had the procedure, I act happier and am more alert.”
“Women need to know that this procedure is available in
Anderson at Saint John’s, and they don’t need to go anywhere
else to get the newer procedures,” she stressed. “Saint
John’s is comparable to the larger facilities. They are
up-to-date. I even remember the names of the women who took
care of me.” She added that “the location of a procedure
doesn’t mean anything; it’s the quality of the facility and
how up-to-date they are. Saint John’s offers all of that
here. Women want to be able to have up-to-date procedures
locally and they can.”
