LAPAROSCOPIC
HYSTERECTOMY:
Dana Smith
Brochures and flyers first informed Dana Smith about a
new, cutting edge procedure that would be life changing for
her. Dana had heard of a hysterectomy; in fact, she had been
trying to convince doctors that she needed one since the age
of 17.
However, this flyer had a twist to the traditional
procedure. It was promoting a laparoscopic hysterectomy
procedure, which promised a much faster healing process by
using new laser technology.
Dana told Dr. Blake about her painful and long lasting
periods. Total body aches, exhaustion, and excessive cramps
accompanied her period every month as well. “He instantly
told me this was not normal,” Dana spoke with a tone of
relief. She continued, “Dr. Blake is especially impressive
as a man in the sense that my past experience has led to
believe that often men think women are wining and being
dramatic about their problems and pain. However, Dr. Blake
was an exception. He really understood the pain I was going
through and even more importantly he understood it is not
normal to live with this much pain.”
When asked to describe Dr. Blake in one word, with a huge
smile on her face she said, “Absolutely wonderful”. She
continued, “He has great bedside manner. I also like that he
is always staying up to date with what is new by going to
professional seminars to learn about the latest procedures
and newest diseases. He was one of the first doctors in
Indiana to perform the laparoscopic hysterectomy, and I
believe that he is still one of the few to still perform the
procedure.” Grinning ear to ear, Dana also explained that
Dr. Blake was a great sense of humor. “He is very passionate
and goes that extra mile to help each individual patient.”
Not only is Dr. Blake an outstanding doctor, but he is also
a great contribution to the community. Along with being a
huge family man, he is also very active with the church.
Dana explained that Dr. Blake puts out a monthly newsletter
through his office every month. Recently, he wrote about why
he chose to live in Pendleton. “He wrote that he enjoys the
school system and small town here in Pendleton. He works for
St. John’s because he admires their beliefs and practices.”
Dana added, “It is nice not to travel far to have such an
advanced procedure done by such a respectable doctor.”
When asked if Dana could change anything about her
procedure, she quickly responded, “I would have got it done
a lot sooner!” Dana described the healing process as
“unbelievably fast” and noted that some of her friends that
have had that traditional hysterectomy done were in complete
shock to see her up and moving around two days after her
procedure. She added, “I did not even need to take my pain
medicine that I was prescribed. There was one day that I
took half of a pain pill and that was because I felt so
great that I was up and moving all day and over worked
myself. But I couldn’t help it because I felt so great and I
did not want to lie around any longer.”
Since her procedure on June 9, 2008, Dana has been able to
do the all things that she has always loved doing, without
having to take two weeks off every month due to painful
periods. She is able to work in her garden and spend quality
time with her energetic daughter everyday; her two favorite
pastimes. Dana describes her new total body feeling as
relief and recommends this procedure to anyone who is
suffering from extreme pain associated with their period.
