Free Pre-Diabetes Class
Saint John’s Center for Diabetes Education is
offering a free 2-hour class on pre-diabetes, a condition in which the
blood sugar level is higher than normal, but not high enough to be
classified as Type 2 diabetes.
The pre-diabetes class is being offered once a month, alternating
between an afternoon session and an evening session. The first class
will be March 20 at 6 p.m. in the Medical Center. Pre-registration is
required by calling 646-8178.
Recent research shows that some long-term damage to the body may already
have occurred when pre-diabetes is discovered. According to the Center
for Disease Control, an estimated 41 million adults, ages 40 to 74, have
pre-diabetes.
Pre-diabetes does not have to become Type 2 diabetes. With healthy
lifestyle changes, blood sugars can return to normal levels.
Those who might benefit from attending are those diagnosed with
pre-diabetes or glucose intolerance, a family history of diabetes, or a
history of gestational diabetes.
The classes will be taught by certified diabetes educators. Topics
covered include how to delay or prevent Type 2 diabetes, how to change
nutrition habits, how to increase physical activity and how to set
achievable goals.
A physician’s order is not required. Class size is limited. Call (765)
646-8178.
