Saint John's Joint Replacement Center is a unique post-operative unit
designed to maximize patient recovery. The unit features a specially
trained surgical staff. Saint John's and Central Indiana Orthopedics
have joined together to form the joint replacement program called Joint
Effort. Joint Effort is a comprehensive program that includes pre-surgery
classes for knee or hip replacement and starts preparing patients for
recovery before they even have surgery.
Saint John’s Joint Replacement
Center is a team approach to surgical intervention and recovery that
includes nursing, rehabilitation, dietary, education, case management and
surgery.
All patients are given
the opportunity to complete the Center’s Joint Effort educational program,
where the patient and family receive information about what to expect
before, during and after joint replacement. Topics include pre- and
post-op, anesthesia, pain control, diet, discharge instructions and
rehabilitation.
Each patient receives
a pre-op screening prior to surgery to ensure any potential health
complications are in control. Controlling these health complications helps
reduce the risk of infection.
Saint John’s surgical
nurses and operating room technicians are specially trained in hip and knee
replacement surgery.
Saint John’s operating
rooms have state-of-the art equipment designed for total joint replacement
and only the highest quality prostheses are used.
Saint John’s has a
dedicated unit for joint replacement patients. Following surgery, patients
are cared for by nurses and therapists specially trained in the care of
joint replacement patients. Pain control is emphasized. Anesthesia used
during surgery blocks the pain for 24 hours or longer. By controlling pain
from the incision, it allows the patient to begin moving the joint within
hours of surgery. Rehabilitation therapists trained to care for joint
replacement patients begin helping the patients walk within a few hours
following surgery. This helps improve mobility and positive outcomes for
the patient.
Trained orthopedic
surgeons provide the joint replacement surgery: Dr. David Graybill, Dr.
Nimu Surtani, Dr. Stephen Shick, Dr. Jamieson Kay, Dr. Joseph Jerman, Dr.
Marcus Thorne.
