DESCRIPTION:

The latest technology to remove kidney stones without surgery is available at Saint John’s. The non-invasive procedure, performed by a lithotripter, fragments the stone with minimal discomfort. During the procedure, X-rays are used to determine the exact location of the stone. The patient is then positioned on a special chair and lowered into a warm water bath. The patient’s lower back and kidney area are positioned over the shock wave apparatus. Focused shock waves are transmitted through the water to the patient, disintegrating the stone.

This procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis at Saint John’s Surgery Center.
