Individuals
who are taking Warfarin (Coumadin®) to prevent blood clots
can now have their blood test monitored with a fingerstick
in the convenience of the new AntiCoagulation Clinic. The
Clinic is offered by the Pharmacy Department and is located
in the Ambulatory Services Center, 2020 Meridian St, Suite
120. Patients must be referred by their physician.
The
management of anticoagulation therapy requires diligent,
regular laboratory monitoring of a blood test called an INR.
The test uses one drop of blood obtained from a fingerstick
instead of having blood drawn from a vein. Some drugs and
foods can have adverse effects on the anticoagulants, which
can result in inadequate treatment or possible bleeding.
The
AntiCoagulation Clinic utilizes the CoagCheck S® System
which allows the patient's INR to be determined in less than
five minutes. The Pharmacist adjusts the dosage as needed
and determines the optimal frequency of the INR.
Anticoagulants are drugs that are given to prevent blood
clots or prevent existing clots from getting larger. Clots
that form in the heart, veins or arteries can block blood
flow and cause a heart attack, stroke, or damage to a limb
or other parts of the body.
Scheduled
patients report directly to the AntiCoagulation Clinic. For
more information, contact your physician or call 646-8247.
