MRI -- the area’s only Open MRI is located
in Saint John’s Ambulatory Services Center. It is beneficial to
those who are claustrophobic or large, and allows a friend or loved one
to stay with the patient during the exam, an option that is particularly
comforting to children. A second MRI unit
is located in the Radiology Department within Saint John's Medical
Center.
.
MRI is one
of the latest diagnostic tools used as an alternative to
conventional X-rays and is the superior scanning method
for a variety of problems. It produces remarkably clear
images of body tissue using computers, radio waves and
magnetic fields, which pose no risk to the patient. With
MRI, a physician can clearly see the differences between
healthy, benign and malignant tissues. All portions of
the brain, spinal cord and organs can be imaged without
moving the patient, and bones do not interfere with the
imaging.
