Individuals looking for restful sleep are turning to Saint John’s
expanded Sleep Lab located on the Medical
Center’s Four South.
One out of three Americans has a sleep disorder.
Excessive daytime sleepiness is often a symptom of a
serious medical problem called sleep apnea, a condition that causes the
individual to stop breathing for short periods of time. Sleep apnea,
if not treated, may eventually cause high blood pressure, diabetes, heart
problems, or stroke. Once detected, most sleep disorders can be
corrected.
Saint John’s Sleep Lab features
state-of-the-art computerized monitoring equipment. A series of wires is connected to various parts of the
patient’s body to monitor functions such as brain waves, muscle tone,
eye movement, heart activity and airflow. Symptoms of
sleep-related disorders include fatigue, excessive daytime sleepiness,
snoring, being awakened by shortness of breath, depression due to
chronic fatigue, work problems due to sleepiness, morning headaches,
trouble concentrating, restlessness at night or restless sleep.
The recording equipment is located in an
adjoining room, where the staff can monitor the patient and make
notations without disturbing the sleeper. A closed-circuit video camera
allows the technologists to monitor the patients as needed and, if
requested by the physician, to videotape the sleep session to document
such conditions as night terror.
If you need a healthcare provider, call the Health
Resource Line at 765-642-3301 for assistance.
Saint John's
Medical Supplies carries a full range of respiratory devices used to
treat sleep apnea.
